LATI has officially obtained the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certification for one of its made in Italy polypropylene (PP)-based flame-retardant compounds, classified as UL94 V0.

This milestone represents a strategic step in strengthening LATI’s presence in India, supporting the export of compounds produced in Italy.

What is BIS Certification and why is it Important?

BIS is the national standardization and certification body of the Republic of India, responsible for defining standards and verifying product compliance, with the aim of ensuring that all products, both imported and locally manufactured, meet the required quality and safety standards.

BIS certification is mandatory for an increasing range of materials and components, including polymer compounds, and ensures:

  • Market access to India without customs barriers
  • Trust from local customers and stakeholders
  • Compliance with quality and safety standards defined by the Indian government

Since October 24, 2025, BIS certification has become mandatory for PP-based compounds, as previously established for other materials.

A Rigorous Process Successfully Completed

Obtaining BIS certification is not a simple bureaucratic procedure, but rather a complex and rigorous process. LATI has tackled this challenge in collaboration with Octagona, a company specializing in internationalization and access to foreign markets, with deep knowledge of the Indian context.

The certification process required a joint effort on multiple fronts: thorough preparation of technical and administrative documentation, carried out with support from Octagona’s Italian-Indian team; a three-day audit conducted at LATI’s production facility in Italy by an Indian inspector; and finally, the submission and verification of samples in accredited laboratories in India, with results fully compliant with required standards.

Only after successfully completing all these phases was the BIS-ISI license issued, authorizing LATI to mark each unit sold in India with the conformity symbol.

According to Alessio Portentoso, Group Sales Director LATI, this certification is concrete proof of LATI’s ability to effectively respond to even the most stringent requirements of extra-EU markets:

“The bureaucratic complexity and costs associated with these certifications discourage many European companies, who choose not to proceed, thus giving up interesting development opportunities in India. For LATI, however, this country represents an extraordinary growth opportunity.”

A Long-Term Strategy: Local Production and Compliance

Beyond direct exports from Italy, in 2025 LATI strengthened its industrial presence in India through the creation of a partnership with LOXIM that led to the establishment of LATI-LOXIM Thermoplastics Private Limited.

With a production facility in Sanand in the state of Gujarat and a production capacity of 20 kton, LATI-LOXIM serves as a reference point for the local production of technical compounds, designed to meet the growing demand of the Indian market, in compliance with national and international regulatory standards.

The BIS certification further strengthens this industrial strategy, consolidating LATI as a reliable and competitive partner for both international OEMs already present in the country and local manufacturers seeking flame-retardant and special solutions that comply with the requirements defined by the Bureau of Indian Standards.
